Coming to the shelter:

We recommend viewing our adoptable animals online at sspca.org/adoptable. If there is anyone you are interested in meeting, come down to the shelter (6201 Florin Perkins Rd, Sacramento) to visit with them. Adoptions are done on a first come first serve basis Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30am to 5:30pm. The earlier you arrive, the more likely the pet will still be available.

Once you arrive, you can choose to walk through the kennels or fill out a Matchmaker/Application Form for a specific animal right away. After you fill out a matchmaker form for a specific animal, our staff will check a government issued photo ID (like a drivers license or passport) and put you in line for an adoption counselor. The adoption counselor will take the animal out of the kennel for you, discuss the pet’s behavior and medical history and your lifestyle to determine if it is a good fit and what they recommend you do to make the transition smooth. The wait time for a counselor can vary widely, but we recommend setting aside at least 2 hours for the entire process.

What if I have other pets at home?

Most introductions are best done at home over the course of several weeks. Our adoption counselors can go over how to best do those introductions. We do offer dog to dog introductions here at the shelter between your dog and a shelter dog to make sure they do well together before going home. Since we do not place any holds on animals, we recommend bringing your dog with you when you come to meet a dog and another person if possible so you can switch off meeting the dog before doing the dog social.
