Foster FUR-lough
Giving Shelter Dogs the Day off!

Blog Post

Have you heard about Foster FURlough?

This program gives Sacramento SPCA foster parents and adoptable dogs the opportunity to spend a day or two together as a field trip or an overnight foster.

Foster FURlough allows our dogs to get a break from shelter life and get some extra attention while they wait for their forever homes. This program also gives Foster Parents more opportunities to participate in fostering who may have busier schedules than traditional fostering allows for. Not up for a three week long foster? How about three hours?

During FURlough, dog friends have the option to go on an outing (or just “veg” on the couch watching a movie!) for a few hours, a whole day, or even an overnight slumber party! Our goal is to give these pups an enjoyable, fun experience and maybe even meet potential adopters. These outings can also reduce stress hormone levels and increase rest in shelter dogs…a major bonus!

Check out #sacspca and #fosterfurlough on Instagram to see some shelter dogs having a great time on FURlough!

We provide foster parents with a list of activity ideas, local hikes and parks, dog friendly restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, and more. Many FURlough parents have found new homes for their pups while out on these adventures!
