Adopt Romy

Post

Romy is a 3 month old, 6.5lb puppy who was born with a cleft lip and palate. Her DNA test says she is a mix of 17 different breeds with Chihuahua, Pittie, Bichon, and Poodle making up the biggest percentages. They estimate her full grown size to be somewhere between 15-29lbs.

Romy is an incredibly sweet and social girl and has met dogs, cats and kids while she has been in foster care. She enjoys having someone around with her often — whether that be a human, dog, or cat — so we recommend her going to a multi-animal home. Romy is doing extremely well with house training, but her new family should be prepared to help her cross the finish line in the process!

Romy has seen the specialists at UC Davis and she qualifies for a soft palate and hard palate repair, but the surgery cannot take place until she is about six months old. The Sacramento SPCA will work with her new family to arrange and cover the cost of the surgery.

Romy needs some special accommodations for her condition until she is old enough for surgery. She drinks water from a water bottle (similar to a rabbit/small animal). She needs to be a fed in a way to prevent food from sticking in her cleft palate: either small wet food meatballs that she can swallow, or appropriately sized kibble that she can swallow without chewing. Even with these accommodations, she is still at risk for aspiration and should be monitored closely. Her medical and surgical care will be covered by the Sacramento SPCA until surgery, but her home care and transportation to veterinary visits will be the responsibility of the adopting family.
