Wortell Education Fund
The Barbara “Bobbie” Wortell Education Program

General information

Barbara “Bobbie” Wortell was an energetic individual, full of life and with a passion and devotion for taking care of people and animals. In fact, her love for animals started very early in life when Bobbie became involved in 4-H. In 4-H, Bobbie learned the true meaning of loving and appreciating animals of all shapes and sizes. Her favorite time of the year was participating in the local county fairs and “showing” her favorite animals, many of which were cows. Her favorite cow was aptly named Peter Pan. Ultimately, her participation in 4-H led her to become a 4-H All Star, the highest honor one can achieve in the program.

Over the years, Bobbie found great love and joy in owning animals of her own, specifically cats and dogs. She held a very special place in her heart for dogs. Mini Schnauzers were her personal favorite. This love for animals, coupled with her genuine care and love of people (specifically children and those less fortunate than her) sparked the need for her family to establish the Bobbie Wortell Scholarship Fund in her memory.

In addition to providing funding for various Humane Education programs at the Sacramento SPCA, this fund will also benefit children in low income households, allowing them to attend Sacramento SPCA’s Camp Kindness sessions. Camp Kindness is a fun-filled way for kids to learn more about dogs, cats, and other companion animals. Camp Kindness is designed to foster awareness about animals, and includes games, crafts, tours, guest speakers, animal-related education, professional demonstrations, veterinary observation, discussions, and plenty of fun!

The world lost a truly special person on July 28, 2006, but Bobbie’s kindness, love and dreams live on through the Bobbie Wortell Education Program. For more information or to apply, please contact the Humane Education Department at 916-504-2849 or email Erika Sanders at esanders@sspca.org.
