Euthanasia Services

Post

In preparation for your visit, please check our hours of operation for any special updates.

We encourage you to bring your pet’s favorite blanket or another comfort from home to provide him/her that extra added peace during his/her passing.

For all euthanasia requests, please bring a government issued identification card.

Additionally, please submit all relevant medical records for your pet including a veterinarian’s diagnosis stating the euthanasia reason for our medical team to review and approve scheduling. If medical records do not exist or a previous diagnosis is not provided, the Sacramento SPCA retains the right to deny the euthanasia request.

We accept cash or credit card only (no checks please) to provide the euthanasia services below:

  • Euthanasia Without Owner Present (by appointment) – This service is $110.
  • Euthanasia “Pre-Medication” With Owner Present (by appointment only) – This service is $200. Only two people over the age of 12 are permitted in the room while the sedation procedure is performed. While we understand that other household pets may also need time to say goodbye, they are not able to be present in the room during the sedation process. This helps ensure a calm, safe, and peaceful environment for everyone.

What you can expect during the owner present “pre-medication” process:

  1. Before the euthanasia procedure begins, we will administer a gentle anesthetic or pre-medication while you are present. This medication helps your pet relax, become drowsy, and feel as comfortable as possible.
  2. After the pre-medication is given, you will have time to sit with your pet, speak to them, and say goodbye.
  3. For everyone’s safety and for your pet’s comfort, families are present for the pre-sedation portion only. Your voice and your touch will be the last things they are aware of. They will drift into a peaceful sleep feeling safe and loved.
  4. When you feel ready, our staff will return to gently take your pet—now fully sedated—to our medical treatment area, where the final step of the euthanasia process will be completed privately and peacefully.

Due to the high demand for owner-present appointments, pre-medication visits are the only owner-present option we are able to offer. If being present for the entire euthanasia process is important to you, we encourage you to reach out to your regular veterinarian to discuss available options.

We understand how difficult this time can be, and we are here to answer any questions and support you in any way we can. We do not offer pick up or in-home services for euthanasia, but we do offer cremation services which we can explain at the time of your visit.  If you have any questions about the three services available, the required documentation or would like to make an appointment, please call our Customer Service Department at 916-504-2851.
