Pet Behavior Services

The Sacramento SPCA Behavior and Training Department offers a number of services and resources to the public to help you with your dog or cat.  Our web site contains a wealth of information about dogs and cats and how to improve or resolve their behavior issues, as well as services for training your dog.

Behavior Topics

Does your dog chew up your furniture or is your cat scratching it? Maybe your dog is barking too much when he’s in the backyard, or your cat isn’t using her litter box. Or perhaps you’re dealing with something more serious like aggressive behavior, separation anxiety, reactivity, or fearfulness.

If your pet has a behavior issue, you have somewhere to turn for help and advice. The Sacramento SPCA offers free behavior handouts and advice as well as low-cost consultations and group dog training classes, whether or not the pet was adopted from our shelter.

Behavior Help Line

Please read through the information in the recommended resources and try the suggested solutions before contacting the Sacramento SPCA about your pet’s issue.

If you’ve done that, and the solutions in our handouts haven’t helped, you can get further help from the Behavior and Training department by filling out our Behavior Help Line Form.  We will review your issue(s) and get back to you as soon as possible by email.

If you do not have email access, you can leave a phone message at 916-504-2848. Leave your address in the message and we’ll mail a helpline form for you to fill out and return.

Private Behavior Consultations

Do you have a dog with a more serious behavior issue?  Need immediate help with your new puppy?  Is your dog timid or aggressive toward people or other dogs (i.e., barking, lunging or snarling at other dogs or people when out on leash; getting into fights with other dogs, including other dogs in the household; growling at, snapping at, nipping or biting people; chasing and possibly injuring smaller animals like cats or small dogs; guarding possessions like his food bowl, toys, chews or even his place on your sofa), or does your dog have severe separation anxiety?

With a private consultation you and your dog will receive one-on-one attention to work on resolving your dog’s behavior issue(s) and receive other training tools to work with and train your dog.  Consultations are by appointment only.  Please fill out a consultation form.  Once we have received it, we will set a date to meet with you and your dog.

Canine Good Citizen Exam

On a quarterly basis, the Sacramento SPCA holds Canine Good Citizen tests at the SPCA facility.  Go to our web site for upcoming CGC test dates and to sign up.

Dog Training Classes (for dogs 4 months of age and older)

The Sacramento SPCA offers group dog training classes to the public.  We offer basic classes (including classes just for small breed dogs), intermediate level classes and tricks classes.  Please see the Dog Training Classes section on this web site for a class description and to sign up on line.

All proceeds go directly to the Sacramento SPCA to help the animals.
