Resolutions for Rover?

FOR RELEASE THROUGH JANUARY 1, 2012
December 20, 2011

(Sacramento, CA) - With the New Year just around the corner, resolutions weigh heavy on the minds of most people.  At the Sacramento SPCA, we figured that these same concerns might be occupying the thoughts of some of our animal friends.  So, we took a random poll of the more than 400 dogs, cats, rbbits and even a couple of rats at our shelter and this is what we've discovered:

  • Four out of five dogs feel the need to exercise more

  • Walking was the number one exercise of choice, with fetch coming in as a close second

  • 65% of all animals surveyed are interested in pursuing healthier eating habits

  • A whopping 96% of the cats surveyed vowed to get more sleep in the coming year

  • 78% of dogs were determined to learn something new, while 99% of all cats thought that they already knew everything

  • 87% of dogs and 8% of cats planned to travel more in the coming year

  • 100% of all animals surveyed resolved to spend more time with friends and family and to love said friends and family unconditionally

"Despite the fact that a mere 12% of all humans actually stick to their New Year's resolutions, we feel confident that our animal friends will be much more successful fulfilling theirs," said Rick Johnson, SPCA Chief Executive Officer.

Visit the Sacramento SPCA in January and resolve to adopt a new best friend.  Your new four-legged friend is guaranteed to make you a better person, and to play a key role in making your 2012 the very best it can be.  Together, who knows that the two of you can achieve!

The Sacramento SPCA is located at 6201 Florin Perkins Road in Sacramento.  Visit www.sspca.org for more information and a partial list of available animals.  The SPCA adoption center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11AM to 6PM (closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day).

Four Sacramento Animal Shelters Come Together to Find 1,000 New Homes

FOR RELEASE THROUGH DECEMBER 2011
December 6, 2011

(Sacramento, CA) - The Sacramento SPCA, City of Sacramento Animal Care Services, Sacramento County Animal Care & Regulation, and Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary are holding a joint "Home for the Holidays" pet adoption special which will run through December 30.  The goal of the holiday adoption promotion is to increase adoptions community-wide and to ultimately find new homes for 1,000 homeless animals by the end of 2011.  During "Home for the Holidays" adoption fees for all animals will be reduced by 75%.

The four participating shelters will take in more than 35,000 homeless animals this year alone.  This figure represents an increase over previous years due to the poor economy and other factors.  Sacramento animal shelters are overburdened with hundreds of animals seeking permanent homes.  Through "Home for the Holidays," the shelters will work together to boost adoptions, and will strive to facilitate 1,000 additional adoptions before the end of the year.

"We're hoping that when people are thinking of adding a furry family member to their household this holiday season, that they will visit their local animal shelters first, and give an animal a Home for the Holidays," said Rick Johnson, Sacramento SPCA Chief Executive Officer.

For more information on "Home for the Holidays," visit www.sspca.org, www.happytails.org, www.sacpetsearch.com, or www.SacCountyShelter.net.

Sacramento SPCA Waives Fees for Adult Cat Adoptions (Celebrating Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month to Save Lives and Put More Cats in Loving Homes)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 7, 2011

Adoption Drive:  The Sacramento SPCA is joining the ASPCA®/FreshStep® Litter Fee-Waived Cat Adoption Campaign and hosting a fee-waived cat adoption drive to find loving homes for cats in the Sacramento area.  The Sacramento SPCA will kick-off the campaign with a fee-waived event on Thursday, June 16 where Sacramento residents can meet the cats and talk to an animal behaviorist to get pet care tips and advice.  Adoption fees will be waived on adult cats and kitten adoptions will be half-off through August 31.

Why:  In Sacramento alone, nearly 22,000 cats enter shelters each year.  To celebrate Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month this June and to help save more lives, the ASPCA and the makers of Fresh Step litter encouraged shelters nationwide to waive the fee they typically charge to adopt cats, while keeping all other adoption policies and thorough matchmaking procedures in place.  The Sacramento SPCA wanted to put more cats in loving homes and decided to join the cause by waiving the $85 typically charged to adopt a cat one year and older, and charging just half the regular adoption price for kittens.

ASPCA research recently published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that waiving fees for adult cats boosts adoptions without diminishing the value adopters place on their cats.  In addition, fee-waived adoptions may actually decrease shelter costs by reducing the average length of stay for adult cats and also could increase donations and store product sales due to an increase in adopters.

When:  Thursday, June 16 from 11AM to 6PM

Where:  The Sacramento SPCA, 6201 Florin-Perkins Road, Sacramento, CA  95828

Interview and Photo Opp:  The Sacramento SPCA staff will be on hand for interviews.  Adoptable (and adorable) cats will be available for photos.  Animal behaviorist Val Masters will be available to answer questions from new adopting families from 11AM - 1PM.

You Can Help:  If there isn't room at home for a fabulous feline, there is another way to help.  From June 1 through July 31, 2011, simply "Like" Fresh Step's Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/freshstep.  With that simple action, the makers of Fresh Step litter will donate $1 (up to $100,000) to the ASPCA to help expand programs like this and get more cats adopted.  Fresh Step will also donate $1,000 to the Sacramento SPCA to help cats in the Sacramento community.

SPCA Announces Plan to Negotiate with City and County for Animal Care

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 24, 2011

(Sacramento, CA) - Sacramento SPCA Chief Executive Officer, Rick Johnson announced today that the SPCA is planning to move forward with negotiations with the City and County of Sacramento to assume responsibility for all animal care services for both municipal shelters.  The SPCA received the go-ahead after unanimous approval by the Sacramento SPCA Board of Directors.

After a three-month feasibility study conducted by La Piana, a Bay Area merger and acquisition consulting firm hired by the Sacramento SPCA, the SPCA has concluded that their organizational model of providing animal care would dramatically enhance the care that animals are receiving in the other Sacramento shelters.  Through a strategic merger in animal care operations, the SPCA projects a return in hours of shelter operations to those hours prior to city and county budget cuts.  The SPCA also foresees an increase in adoptions of homeless animals throughout the Sacramento community.

"Ultimately, this collaboration will improve the care homeless animals receive while in Sacramento shelters," said Johnson.  "We have been fortunate to work closely with both the City and the County over the past two years, and we believe that this model for animal care will serve our community's animals best."

Don't Adopt a Rabbit for Easter - Adopt a Rabbit for Life

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    April 20, 2011

(Sacramento, CA) - Especially at this time every year, many well-meaning parents - who think they're buying a low-maintenance starter pet - surprise their children with live rabbits.  While the idea may be tempting, young children and bunnies usually aren't a good match.  Children like a companion they can cuddle and hold.  Rabbits are not passive and cuddly, they are fragile, ground-loving creatures who may feel frightened when held and restrained.

The Sacramento SPCA is urging parents to fill Easter baskets with chocolate bunnies, marshmallow chicks and assorted stuffed critters - not their live counterparts.  The Sacramento SPCA received 229 unwanted rabbits in 2010 - many of them Easter gifts.  Remember, an animal is a lifetime commitment, not a holiday toy to be temporarily enjoyed.

Rabbits are delicate and social animals, requiring very specific care and feeding.  All too often, when the initial excitement has waned and the novelty of a live gift wears off, many Easter rabbits wind up at shelters like the Sacramento SPCA.  And others are dumped outside where they face predators, cars, illness and injury, or are resigned to lives of neglect and boredom in cramped cages.

What if I really want a rabbit?
If you've decided that you really want to add a rabbit to your family, do your homework first, and wait until after the Easter holiday has passed.  Rabbits can live 10 years or more with proper care.  While rabbits make great pets for the right person, they aren't for everyone, and the decision to adopt a bunny should be a well-informed one.

Rabbits are clean animals, and are reasonable easy to litterbox train.  Yet rabbits are not low-maintenance pets - it takes a good deal of time and effort to properly feed and care for a rabbit.  Because they are social, rabbits require regular attention and exercise outside of their enclosure, and they require a variety of foods as well as plenty of proper grawing material.  Rabbits should also be kept out of extreme temperatures, and may be best kept as indoor pets.

Rabbits are bright, inquisitive and social animals that can offer a wonderful alternative in cases where it may not be possible to keep a dog or cat.  With a little training, time and attention, rabbits can make wonderful companions, but the decision to adopt should always be well thought-out and with long-term commitment in mind.

The Sacramento SPCA has developed an umbrella of programs designed to promote positive health for both two- and four-legged seniors alike.  The Sacramento SPCA's Senior Services program is designed to bring human and animal seniors together, and help keep them together for life - through special adoption programs, pet therapy visits and a variety of discounted programs and services geared toward seniors.

    January 20, 2011

Sacramento Animal Care Partners Offering Half-Off Rabbit Adoptions
(Sacramento, CA) - The Sacramento SPCA, City of Sacramento Animal Care Services and Sacramento County Animal Care & Regulation are celebrating the Year of the Rabbit with a "Find SomeBUNNY to Love" half-off rabbit adoption special during February.

The three animal agencies will kick off the rabbit adoption special on Thursday, February 3 in celebration of Chinese New Year and the Year of the Rabbit.  February is also National Adopt-a-Rabbit Month, so the shelters are extending the adoption promotion through Sunday, February 27.

The participating agencies cared for more than 400 homeless rabbits in 2010.  To help boost adoptions, to highlight the rabbits housed at the shelter and to educate people about these unique companions, the shelters are offering a reduced adoption rate of $20 on all rabbits throughout the February promotion.  Every rabbit is spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Rabbits are bright, inquisitive, social and affectionate animals that enjoy the comjpany of people and other gentle animals.  With just a little training and attention, rabbits can make wonderful indoor companions.  Rabbits are clean animals, making them reasonably easy to litterbox train.

(|Sacramento, CA) - The Sacramento SPCA is stepping forward to offer permanent sanctuary for Governor Schwarzenegger's 800-pound bronze grizzly bear.  Now that Jerry Brown has taken office and rumor has it that the bear may be in need of a home, the Sacramento animal welfare agency is offering to provide refuge for the grizzly statue, purchased several years ago by Governor Schwarzenegger.

The SPCA has already designated a "home" for the Governor's bear in front of its Florin-Perkins Road facility, and will provide safe and humane transport from the Capitol to the SPCA shelter.

"We understand that there is a bear in need of a home, and we're an SPCA in need of a bear to draw drive-by visitors to our shelter," said Rick Johnson, SPCA Executive Director.  "The Sacramento SPCA will care for more than 12,500 homeless animals in 2011, and a grizzly in need of a home is no exception.  We have just the place for this particular bear at the SPCA, adn we are ready to accept responsibility for caring for the bear for life."

The Sacramento SPCA is currently waiting to hear from Governor Brown's office.
