Position:

Animal Services Supervisor

Description:
Department:  Animal Services
Reports to:  Animal Services Manager, Manager of Operations
FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt Full Time

General Summary:
This position is responsible for the daily supervision and assignment of Animal Services Staff. The incumbent is responsible for the sanitary condition of the kennel facilities and the humane care, health and welfare of all animals in the Sacramento SPCA's care. This position also performs euthanasia of animals when required.

Essential Job Duties: 
1. Prepares daily work assignments, meal and rest break schedules, and other projects as needed.
2. Corrects and addresses issues with employees work performance. Maintains records of issues.
3. Works collaboratively with Animal Services staff and other shelter personnel to achieve a clean, healthy and sanitary environment for the animals.
4. Dispositions animals for euthanasia. Performs, trains, or assists with the euthanasia of animals in accordance with established laws and Sacramento SPCA policy; disposes of the euthanized animal in accordance with established Sacramento SPCA policy.
5. Completes daily records for animal euthanasia, instructs staff in the proper disposal of empty fatal plus bottles. Ensures all cabinets containing DEA controlled substances are kept locked and secured in the prescribed manner.
6. Assists the Animal Services Manager with the training and progress of animal services staff, providing for their training, career development and to maximize their potential for the good of the shelter.
7. Reviews the work of Animal Services staff under guidelines set by the Manager and ensures that accurate and timely information is performed and available. Assists the Manager of Operations to ensure that all animal service activities are reviewed and modified in an effective and efficient manner.
8. Provides accurate information and friendly professional service to the public and to coworkers in a responsive, positive, courteous, truthful and tactful manner and ensures that others working in the kennel areas do so as well.
9. Responds to sensitive and difficult complaints from the public, staff and volunteers and attempts to resolve conflict situations in a professional manner. Sets an example of professionalism to subordinates and enforces policies and procedures as it relates to animal services.
10. Must be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
11. Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer's safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Participates in meetings with other members of the staff as directed by the Manager of Operations. Shares ideas and suggestions designed to improve working conditions within the programs of the Sacramento SPCA.
2. Treats all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job and transmits these values to others.
3. Consistently strives to keep abreast of the animal care field and animal welfare issues, techniques, procedures and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques.
2. Ability to apply common sense understanding to instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
3. Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence.
4. Ability to get along and work effectively with the public, management, fellow employees, volunteers, and other agencies and groups.
5. Basic computer skills using standard office programs such as Word or similar programs.
6. Valid California drivers license with a clear driving record for at least one year prior to application. Driving skills for both standard and automatic transmission vehicles.

Education and Experience:
1. High school graduate or GED equivelent with advanced study in animal care.
2. Two years experience in an animal shelter or animal care facility with emphasis on the care, handling, and kenneling of domestic animals.
3. Euthanasia certified or ability to become certified within six months of hire.

Physical Requirements:
1. Any allergic condition that would be aggravated from exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitized facilities, vehicles or equipment, may be a disqualification.
2. Must stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently to perform duties. Have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.

Working Conditions:
1. May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public. Must be able to deal with an often times emotion-charged public and carry a fast paced and changing work load which at times can be stressful.
2. By the nature of the industry, there may be occasional exposure to dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious, and or dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and to infectious diseases.
3. Must be available and willing to work such weekends, holidays, overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Position:

Part Time Veterinarian

Description:

Department:  Spay Neuter Clinic
Reports to:  Chief of Surgery, Chief Operations Officer
FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt, Part Tme three days a week.

General Summary:
This position performs spay and neuter surgeries on cats and dogs, occasional rabbits and some other animals as the need arises in our high-volume Spay/Neuter Clinic. Veterinarian may be asked to help with shelter medicine cases on occasion.

Essential Job Duties:
1. Performs spay and neuter surgeries as scheduled in any of our clinics including feral cat clinics and a mobile clinic.
2. Must do 20 to 25 surgeries each working day, with a goal of 30 in the first year, with minimal complication rate.
3. Provides reasonable pre-operative and post-operative care for the animals.
4. Verifies the maintenance of equipment and ordering of the necessary supplies and drugs.
5. The employee assists in ensuring the safe storage and access to controlled and non-controlled drugs in compliance with applicable State and Fedral regulations
6. The employee shall be responsible for ensuring and maintaining that the employee's professional license is curren and in good standingt at all times.
7. Must be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
8.  Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to remain current on the principles and new developments in assigned work areas.

2. Ability to perform common surgical procedures including, but not limited to, mass removal, dental extractions, umbilibal and inguinal hernia repairs, dewclaw removal, enucleation, and amputation.
3. Understand, interpret and apply pertinent provisions of county, state and federal laws, rules, regulations and standards that affect the operation and administration of the clinic.
4. Ability to get along and work effectively with the public, management, fellow employees, volunteers, and other agencies and groups.
5. Ability to read and comprehend simple and complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to provide detailed correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations and in demonstrating good public relations skills.

1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
2. A current license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California.
3. Practice veterinary medicine within the principles and ethics of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
4. Attemd CVMA-approved continuing education seminars and earn the required minimum number of CE hours for license renewal.
5. Preferred minimum of two years clinic experience after graduation.

Part-Time Adoption Counselor

General Summary
It is the responsibility of the Adoption Counselor, under the direction of the Adoption Supervisor, to assist the public with specific adoption service needs, answer questions and concerns and provide needed informationn when called upon.  Individuals in this classification represent Sacramento SPCA policies and procedures to the public and are expected to maintain a positive and receptive environment for those individuals visiting or calling the Sacramento SPCA.

Essential Job Functions
1.  Greet and assist all customers entering the Adoptions lobby.
2.  Listen to customers and provide effective resonses and remedies to their questions and needs.
3.  Counsel potential adopters in selecting a pet that fits their lifestyle; discuss the responsibilities of pet ownership; show animals to prospective adopters during shelter open hours; give information about specific animals, and explain the adoption process to shelter visitors.
4.  Responsible for knowing which animals are available for adoption and knowing the temperaments and personalities of these pets.
5.  Communicated principles that convey and impart an understanding of the policies and procedures of the Sacramento SPCA to the public.
6.  Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employers safety policies and rules.  Must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

1.  Basic animal care knowledge.  Preferred - Knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior and appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques.
2.  Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos.

4.  Ability to effectively present informaton in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
5.  Valid California Drivers License with a clear driving record for at least one year prior to application.  Driving skills for both standard and automatic transmission vehicles.
