Position Overview
The Sacramento SPCA is a vibrant, well-established, independent non-profit animal shelter in growth mode with plans to expand its animal campus in order to increase services to the community. The Director of Development position is a tremendous opportunity for an accomplished development professional with a love for animals to make a significant impact in the Sacramento community. The SSPCA is seeking a strategic thinker and leader to take the organization’s fundraising efforts to the next level. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience and success in leading and growing a development department at a mid-sized or larger non-profit.

General Summary
The Director of Development oversees all fundraising initiatives and activities of the organization. He or she will be responsible for the creation and implementation of an overall development plan and fundraising budget. In addition to overseeing the annual campaign, special and community fundraising events, online giving, major gifts, corporate partnerships, planned giving and grants, the position’s focus for growth will be to prepare and lead the organization through a capital campaign.

As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Development participates in strategic planning and budgeting initiatives for the organization in addition to problem solving.

He or she will lead, motivate, coach and be held accountable for the success of the Development team, which includes a diverse group of professionals and volunteers. The position will also work closely with the marketing and communications department to ensure that brand awareness and community engagement is strong and that online and event revenue goals are met.

Essential Job Functions

  • Work with the CEO and other department heads to develop a strategic fundraising plan to identify and determine funding priorities for the next five years.
  • Create a development plan and goals for all revenue streams of fundraising including direct mail, online gifts, monthly giving, planned giving, individual gifts, major gifts, corporate or third party giving, vehicle donations, foundations and grants, workplace giving, and special events.
  • Develop an annual budget and monitor expenditures to stay within approved budgetary limits.
  • Create a case statement for the organization to embark on an expansion of services and facilities and a future capital campaign.
  • Provide direction and support for implementation of direct-mail, planned giving, major gifts, special events and all other ongoing revenue generating campaigns.
  • Focus on growth of the SSPCA’s individual donor base and strategic upward movement of donors to encourage donor loyalty and commitment to the organization.
  • Collaborate with the major gifts officer, CEO and Board to cultivate and grow the number of major gift and planned-giving donors.
  • Continue to cultivate relationships with an existing portfolio of current major donors and corporate/foundation supporters and develop new relationships.
  • Oversee coordination of Board Development Committee meetings. Work with the Board and Development committee members to create and execute an agenda that will develop them as fundraisers.
  • Supervise quality control and capacity of data maintained by the fundraising office. Continually evaluate database systems and various donation gathering platforms to ensure their efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Supervise, train, coach and evaluate Development staff including the major gifts officer, development and donations processing coordinators, events manager and assistant.
  • Oversee and help identify grant opportunities, proposals, applications and evaluations.
  • Work closely with the marketing and communications team to ensure consistency in messaging, brand awareness and community engagement; that community and special fundraising events are well-attended and revenue goals are met; coordination of direct mail, online giving and special fundraising campaigns with newsletters, the website and social media.
  • Prepare periodic reports for the Board to track fundraising metrics.
  • Participate as an active member of the executive team committee, contributing to strategic planning and team projects.
