De-Bunking De-Skunking

>

There is NOTHING worse than letting your dog out in the backyard before bedtime only to have them run back inside as you realize….They’ve….Been….Skunked!
We know from first-hand experience that this is a pretty unpleasant experience, so we’ve pulled together some quick and easy tips that should help if this ever happens to your dog:
1. First of all…DON’T let your dog inside the house. The smell will linger in any fabric or cloth-including your couch, carpet, clothing, etc. The oils that are emitted from the skunk spread very easily. If possible, try and locate the sprayed area and soak up the oils with a paper towel.
2. It is possible your dog could have been sprayed in the nose or eyes causing discomfort. Try and clean these areas very carefully with water and cloth/sponge.
3. There is a wide array of products on the market for “De-Skunking” your dog, but we’ve found that the easiest and most affordable is the following home remedy:
Hose
1 quart Hydrogen Peroxide
¼ cup baking soda
1 tsp liquid soap
4. Mix the ingredients together and prepare for bath time immediately! Note: If you can determine where the dog was sprayed, try to only wash that select area to keep from spreading the oils.
5. Rinse and repeat if the smell lingers. You may wish to do a couple of rinses in one sitting, or if you can tolerate it, wait until the next day and repeat the bath.
6. Discard the leftover mixture- don’t plan to keep it, as it will fizz and create pressure in an air tight container!
*The above mixture is recommended for most size dogs, however for dogs over 90lbs; you may need to double the dosage.
Happy De-Skunking!
