SPCA Enters the Cat Days of Summer with an Adoption Fee Reduction News & Events >> Press Releases >>SPCA Enters the Cat Days of Summer with an Adoption Fee Reduction June 16, 2009 (Sacramento, CA) -- Between warming temperatures and the increasing number of area foreclosures, the Sacramento SPCA is seeing the number of homeless cats and kittens increase at a startling rate. To help encourage adoptions and create more happy endings during this especially busy time of year, the Sacramento SPCA is decreasing cat adoption fees by more than half for the months of June and July. Beginning June 1, cat and kitten adoption fees will be $40.00. All adoptions include a spay or neuter surgery, microchip, vaccinations, a veterinary check and more. "Summer is a very busy time of year for the SPCA," said Rick Johnson, Sacramento SPCA Executive Director. "Add to that the economic situation we're facing, and the SPCA is seeing a dramatic increase in the number of animals we're caring for. We're hoping that by lowering cat adoption prices during this busy time that we can find homes for more homeless animals." The Sacramento SPCA cared for more than 12,000 animals in 2008, an increase of more than 1,000 animals over the year prior. Although the SPCA veterinarians performed more than 13,000 spay/neuter surgeries through the shelter's high-volume spay/neuter clinic in 2008, pet (especially cat) overpopulation is still at crisis levels in our community. Through its reduction in cat adoption fees, the SPCA hopes to find homes for hundreds of cats and kittens in the next two months.
