June 11, 2009
With kitten season in full swing, the sagging economy forcing poeple and their pets out of their homes, and the continuing issue of uncontrolled breeding, the Sacramento SPCA is caring for homeless cats in record numbers.
"The SPCA is currently caring for more than 300 cats and kittens, and will receive more than 6,000 before the year is out," said Rick Johnson, SPCA Executive Director. "While the SPCA performed nearly 13,000 spay/neuter surgeries in our clinic last year, the staggering number of homeless cats is due in large part to uncontrolled breeding - an issue that lingers in our community."
In an effort to increase cat adoptions during this busy time, the SPCA has reduced cat adoption fees by more than half (to just $40) through the end of July. Adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchip, veterinary visit and more.
"The SPCA is making every effort to place as many cats as possible during this especially busy time of year," said Johnson. "Additionally, the SPCA is taking a proactive approach to combating the region's pet overpopulation problem by operating Northern California's only high-volume spay/neuter clinic - something we're very proud to offer to our community."
