(Sacramento, CA) - Six-hundred-ninety-five animals found new homes during the Sacramento SPCA's Home for the Holidays Campaign, which ended on December 30. The highly successful adoption campaign brought SPCA adoption totals to a record 6,059 animals in 2009.
Due in part to difficult economic times and a soaring number of foreclosures throughout the greater Sacramento area, the Sacramento SPCA received a record number of animals in 2009. Two of the top reasons given for surrendering a pet to the SPCA in 2009 were "moving/foreclosure" and an "inability to afford a pet."
In addition to caring for and placing homeless animals, the SPCA runs the region's only high-volume spay and neuter clinic, through which more than 16,000 animals were altered in 2009 - another record for the Sacramento SPCA. The SPCA also offers dog obedience classes, a free pet behavior helpline, camps and schools programs for children, programs for seniors, vaccinations and microchips and much more.
The Sacramento SPCA is an independent non-profit established in 1894 and dedicated to ensuring the humane treatment of all animals in the Sacramento area. The SPCA is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11AM - 6PM and is located at 6201 Florin-Perkins Road in Sacramento.
