Keep Your Pet Safe on Halloween

Seasonal Pet Care >> Keep Your Pet Safe on Halloween

Halloween is a fun time for humans, but not necessarily for pets. Please follow these tips, and share them with others, to help keep all pets safe this Halloween.

  • Protect your pet on Halloween by keeping it indoors. A pet that's out at night with trick-or-treaters might get spooked by their excited voices and costumes, which could cause it to run off and get lost.
  • If you have a black cat, you should be especially careful about keeping it indoors on Halloween. Some people are superstitious about black cats and may try to scare or harm them.
  • Keep your pet confined and away from the door while you're greeting trick-or-treaters at your home to prevent it from darting outdoors.
  • If you have a dog, it may feel that its territory is being invaded by the constant onslaught of visitors. Keeping your dog in a secluded area of the house will help it stay calm and prevent it from growling or possibly biting your visiting ghouls and goblins.
  • Keep Halloween candy out of your pet's reach because it can make your pet sick. In fact, chocolate can be fatal to dogs!
  • Celebrate Halloween with your pet by giving it goodies that are made especially for its species, like dog biscuits or cat treats.
  • If you're considering giving someone a black cat to celebrate Halloween, please either give them a stuffed animal or a homemade gift certificate to the Sacramento SPCA instead. This will allow them to select just the right cat (or other pet) for them.
