Group Project 1: Newspaper Drive

Youth Community Service and Group Projects >> Group Projects >> Project 1: Newspaper Drive

What is a newspaper drive?

A newspaper drive is an effort to collect newspapers to donate to the animals at the Sacramento SPCA.

Why are newspapers important to the animals?

Newspapers help the animals stay clean and comfortable during their stay with us. They are placed in the bottom of all cages housing cats and puppies. The newspapers are soiled by the animals and thrown away a few times each day.

Sounds like a great idea! How do we get started?

Create posters asking people to donate their newspapers for your collection drive project. The posters can be put up in your school, in community groups or clubs you may belong to, and throughout your neighborhood.

*You will need to decide how the newspapers will be collected and include that information on your posters.

Supplies you will need:

  • Poster-sized paper
  • Colorful pens and crayons
  • Tape/thumbnails
  • Rubber bands
  • Newspaper unfolding instruction sheet

What do we do with the newspapers once we collect them?

Once you have collected your newspapers, you will need to unfold them. Set up a large table and unfold the newspapers page-by-page until you have a stack about two inches high. Then roll the papers into tubes of 25 or 35 sheets each and put rubber bands on both ends of the newspaper roll. Mark each roll indicating the number of papers in each roll.

How do we donate the newspapers?

Bring the prepared newspapers to the Sacramento SPCA at 6201 Florin-Perkins Rd. during our hours of operation. If you have questions, call (916) 383-7387, ext. 9107

Thank you! Your efforts will make a big difference in the lives of many cats and puppies!
