Position: | Temporary Animal Care Attendant | | Description: | This is a temporary position for 90 days that may turn to permanent status depending on the needs of the SPCA.
Job Title: Temporary Animal Care Attendant
Department: Animal Services
Reports To: Animal Services Manager / Director of Operations
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Alternative work schedule: 4 days, 10 hours each, must work weekends. Sunday, Monday and Thursday off
General Summary:
Employees in this area have the primary responsibility for the sanitary maintenance and care of all animals housed with the SSPCA, maintaining clean and orderly animal housing and employee work areas, assisting with the placement or euthanasia of animals, maintaining the health and welfare of all animals in the care of the society and assisting the general public as required.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Responsible for examining and processing animals received by the SSPCA, which includes properly completing necessary paperwork.
2. Maintains proper identification and records on all SSPCA animals.
3. Responsible for feeding, watering, and exercising all shelter animals.
4. Rinses, scrubs and disinfects animal cages, hallways, floors, walls and isolation/quarantine areas; cleans water and food dishes and related kennel equipment and facilities.
5. Bathes and grooms animals, administers vaccinations and completes preliminary physical examinations in a prescribed manner. Medicates any animal designated for treatment by the Staff Veterinarian.
6. Responsible for daily and periodic checks regarding animal health, safety, cleanliness and overall well-being and to report any significant problems immediately to his/her supervisor.
7. Assist in conducting behavior assessments and health screenings on incoming animals, to include the decision making process of approval or denial for acceptance into the adoption program
8. Performs or assists with the euthanasia of animals in accordance with established laws and SSPCA policy; disposes of the euthanised animal in accordance with established SSPCA procedure.
9. Maintains proper control of DEA controlled substances.
10. Provides accurate information and friendly professional service to the public and to co-workers in a positive, courteous, truthful and tactful manner.
11. Communicates principles that convey and impart an understanding of the policies and procedures of the SSPCA to the public.
Additional Duties and responsibilities:
1. Treats all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job and transmits these values to others.
2. Assists with tours, lectures, public education programs, fundraising activities and special events as needed.
3. Conforms all safety procedures.
4. Answers all public telephone calls in a professional manner, routes inquiries to the proper person/department and initiates written messages for follow up.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Basic animal care knowledge. Preferred: knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques.
2. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos.
3. Ability to write reports and correspondence.
4. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
5. Valid California Drivers license with a clear driving record for at least one year prior to application. Driving skills for both standard and automatic transmission vehicles.
6. Basic computer skills using standard office programs such as Word or similar programs.
Education and Experience:
1. High school graduate or GED equivalent with 6 months related animal care experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements:
1. Must be in good health. Any allergic condition that would be aggravated from exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitize facilities, vehicles or equipment, is a disqualification.
2. Must stand, walk, bend and stoop to perform duties. Have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 40 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.
Working Conditions:
1. May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public. Must be able to deal with an often times emotion-charged public and carry a fast paced and changing work load which at times can be stressful.

Position: | Part Time Adoption Counselor | | Description: | SSPCA Job Description
Job Title: Adoption Counselor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
One part time position available, 16 hours a week, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2:00-6:00 pm.
General Summary:
It is the responsibility of the Adoption Counselor, under the direction of the Adoption Supervisor; to assist the public with specific adoption service needs, answer questions and concerns and provide needed information when called upon. Individuals in this classification represent SSPCA policies and procedures to the public and are expected to maintain a positive and receptive environment for those individuals visiting or calling the SSPCA.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Greet and assist all customers entering the Adoptions lobby.
2. Listen to customers and provide effective responses and remedies to their questions and needs.
3. Counsel potential adopters in selecting a pet that fits their lifestyle, discuss the responsibilities of pet ownership, show animals to prospective adopters during shelter open hours, give information about specific animals and explain the adoption process to shelter visitors.
4. Responsible for knowing which animals are available for adoption and knowing the temperaments and personalities of these pets.
5. Communicates principles that convey and impart an understanding of the policies and procedures of the SSPCA to the public.
6. Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employers safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.

General Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Adoptions Supervisor, the employee in this classification has responsibilities that include assisting the public with adoption service needs, answering questions and concerns, and providing needed information when called upon. Individuals in this classification represent Sacramento SPCA policies and procedures, and are expected to create a positive and receptive environment for those individuals visiting or calling the Sacramento SPCA.
Alternative work schedule, four ten hour days 7:30 am to 6:30 pm. Sunday, Monday, Thursday off while training for position. After training days off will be Friday, Saturday, Monday off
Essential Job Functions:
1. Responsible for the daily supervision of the adoption staff along with performing the essential duties of adoption counseling.
2. Counsel potential adopters in selecting a pet that fits their lifestyle -- discuss the responsibilities of pet ownership, show animals to prospective adopters during shelter open hours, give information about specific animals and explain the adoption process to shelter visitors.
3. Responsible for all daily paperwork, ensuring that all revenue is kept secure, and all records pertaining to revenue are turned in at the end of each workday in the absence of the Adoptions Supervisor.
4. Prepares/delegates daily office work assignments, rest and meal break schedules, and other projects as needed. Works collaboratively with adoptions staff to maintain a healthy and sanitary environment for the customers we serve.
5. Makes exceptions to "no exceptions" regarding behavior evaluation codes, which is based on the individual adoptor's particular situation, background, knowledge, etc.
6. Makes decision to discount or waive adoption fees, based on individual situations.
7. Responsible for conveying any and all information to the adoption staff regarding changes in procedures and protocols within the department and the organization.
8. Conducts meetings with adoptions staff regarding policies, procedures, training, and customer service, keeping them abreast of all aspects of the department and the welfare of the Sacramento SPCA, as delegated by the Adoptions Supervisor.
9. Participates in the interview process with the Adoptions Supervisor regarding potential hires.
10. Assists the Adoptions Supervisor with the training and development of the adoptions staff with a focus on adoption counseling, providing for their growth and maximizing their potential for the good of the shelter.
11. Reviews the work of the adoptions staff under the guidelines set by the Adoptions Supervisor on a regular basis to ensure that accurate and timely information is performed and available. Ensures that staff follows policies and procedures set by the Sacramento SPCA and Adoptions Supervisor.
12. Ensures the adoption staff is on task at all times.
13. Keeps the Adoptions Supervisor abreast of all adoptions department activities.
Additional Duties and responsibilities:
1. Assists the Adoptions Supervisor in coordinating special events or activities occurring in the adoption center.
2. Provides accurate information and friendly professional service to the public and to coworkers in a responsive, positive, courteous, truthful and tactful manner, and ensures that others working in the adoptions department do so as well.
