Humane Education

What is Humane Education?

Lessons of kindness, responsibility, and respect for animals and people alike are an important part of ensuring a bright future for our children and the world they will inherit.

The kids of today are the companion animal guardians of tomorrow. Problems of pet overpopulation and animal abuse and neglect are at crisis levels in the Sacramento area. The Sacramento SPCA's Humane Education programs are a fun-filled way to help our kids understand animals and important pet-related issues, knowledge they will need to make good choices for the community in just a few short years.

From classroom visits to shelter tours to our popular Camp Kindness day camps, the SSPCA's Humane Education programs are available to anyone who wants to learn more about pets and their important place in our families and society. All humane education opportunities are made possible by the generosity of SSPCA members, sponsors, and donors.

Camp Kindness

3 Kids with Kittens One of our most popular programs is Adrienne Maloof's Camp Kindness, an enrichment day camp held at the Sacramento SPCA and offered during the summer, school holidays, and at select times during the school year.

Camp Kindness is a fun, interactive way for kids to learn about pets and animal-related issues through games, crafts, guest speakers, demonstrations, and plenty of hands-on socialization with adoptable SSPCA animals.

Camp Kindness sessions are reasonably priced, and financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Classroom Visits

Teachers and educators are welcome to inquire about our SSPCA classroom visits for grades K through 12. Presentations include "Being Safe With Dogs" (great for K-4 classes) and "Too Many Pets!" (grades 5 and up), an interactive exploration of the pet overpopulation problem and possible solutions. There is no fee for classroom visits, though donations are happily accepted.

Guided Tours

SSPCA Adoption Center tours are available for field trip groups, scout troops, and youth organizations during the shelter's open hours, Tuesday through Friday. A reservation is required, and a $2.00/child donation is required ($20 minimum for groups smaller than 10). Most tours last approximately 45 minutes, and are preceded by a brief educational activity. We also welcome adult tour groups.
