On Your Bark...Get Set...

Doggy Dash 2008!

Important Information

Rules for the Humans

  • Clean up after your dog!
  • Bring your dog only if they like being around other people and dogs.
  • Keep your dog on a 6 foot or shorter leash at all times.
  • For safety, please limit yourself to walking or running with only one dog.
  • Don't bring your dog if they are younger than six months of age.
  • Run/walk the course only if you and your dog are in adequate physical condition (see our Fitness and Training Page).

Rules for the Dogs

  • Wear your current ID and license tags!
  • Ready to run? You may be too young or too old. If you're young, wait until you're full grown (6 months or older) so you don't damage growth plates. If you're old, make sure you've trained a bit so you don't risk joint injuries (see our Fitness and Training Page).
  • Sorry...no off leash allowed! Stay on your 6 foot or shorter leash at all times!
  • Only one human runner or walker per dog.
  • Don't come if you don't like people or other dogs!

Helpful Hints

  • Just as humans get their doctor's OK before starting an exercise program, dogs may need clearance from their veterinarians as well. Your dog may have underlying problems or existing health issues that may be ascerbated by too much exercise too quickly. Make sure your dog's vaccinations are up-to-date. Remember, exposure to other dogs increases your best friend's risk of disease.
  • Out of shape? You can't run non-stop for a long time without building up to it and neither can Fido! If either one of you is out of shape start with 20 minute walks alternated with two minute segments of running time (see our Fitness and Training Page for more information.
  • Don't spend more time scolding than running! Get to an obedience class where your dog will learn to overcome the distractions of other animals on the trail as well learn the basic commands of sit, stay and heel. The Sacramento SPCA offers six week obedience classes year round. Visit our Canine Training and Classes Page for more information.
  • Your dog overheats faster than you because it pants rather than sweats. Don't get bone dry! Panting is less efficient than sweating for cooling. Excessive panting (including frothing and red gums) can be a sign of dehydration or heat stroke. You and your dog need to drink plenty of water both before and after a run, and you may consider hosing your dog down afterwards.
  • Rover doesn't wear running shoes! Paws can bruise on asphalt, so running on soft surfaces like grass, sand or dirt is better. Give your dog a couple of days off if his paws are cracked or sore and seek veterinary treatment for bleeding pads.
  • Water for all participants will be provided and in abundance!
